Training Program Overview
The CFA Training Program provides specially recruited volunteers with in-depth knowledge and skills on the more practical components of healthy eating including:
- Canada's Food Guide
- Food Safety
- Food Shopping
- Food Storage
- Food Preparation - basic skills + cooking for one/two + low fat cooking
- Focus on the Food Groups
- Presentation, Facilitation and Leadership Skills
- Healthy Eating for Children
There are 12 core sessions designed to be delivered once a week for 3 hours per session. Each session includes a lecturette with PowerPoint, background reading and workbook material as well as either a cooking demonstration or cooking together segment.
There are 4 optional sessions:
- Vegetarianism
- Nutrition Labeling
- Food Preservation - Canning and Pickling; Jams and Jellies, Freezing and Drying
- Working with Multicultural Groups
Each trainee receives a 250 page CFA Resource Binder including 100 recipes for use in CFA programming which is theirs to keep if training is completed and 1 year of community service. Trainees also complete the Food Handlers Certification course.
